Plot and Summary:

Don Lafontain is considered one of the greatest voice over artist ever to live. He immortalized the words " In a World..... "  by all the trailers and movies he did. The film begins with his life achievement and an interview given by many voice over artists including Sammy Soto( Played by Fred Melamed) and Gustav( Played by Ken Marino).

Carol is a middle aged voice coach who lives with her father( Sammy Soto) Sammy criticizes carol for trying for the voice over field as it is male dominant and she probably  will not get in. She then gets kicked out as Sammy is bringing his girlfriend Jamie to live with him

Carol is pissed and goes to her sister Dani's house and stays there. Dani is married to Moe and is  working as a concierge  in a hotel. Carol has a weird habit of collecting other people's voices and has a huge collection of it (she collects a Japanese guys voice and also an Irish guys voice which turns ugly in the film)

Carol works at an audio studio owned by  Louis (played by Demetri Martin). She trains actors for giving good voice over for their films. Louis secretly has feelings for carol but doesn't show it out. Unexpectedly Carol gets to do a voice over for a new movie trailer" welcome to the jungle gym"  and she gets the part. She is elated and from then on both Louis and Carol become good friends and they work together, party all the time.

Carol tries to tell her dad about her success many times but could not reach him. Meanwhile Gustave (considered as the protege of Sammy) and Sammy discuss about the lady who stole the movie trailer from them. Sammy tells Gustave that he is the next inline for Don LaFontain and he is going to retire.

There is real comic scenes between Dani and moe and in louis studio between him and his assistant.  There is a big party at Gustav's place and everyone is invited to attend . Gustave tries to play with carol and carol ends up staying the night at gustav's .

Meanwhile  carol asks Dani to take a voice of an Irish guy. Dani agrees reluctantly and while taking the audio she ends up making out with him. Moe finds this audio and is shocked he walks out of the house silently. While carol returns home to Dani's house she finds Moe and there is an  awkward moment. Moe speaks his mind to carol and walks out. He takes about " a bubble where we can speak our mind and never have to think about it again".

Carol , Dani get invited to Sammy house for dinner and Sammy learns from Dani that  carol is the one who got the movie trailer . his reaction is rather different from what carol expected. He begins by saying that women cannot excel in this field. Dani and carol walk out. There is a search going for the voice over artist for "the amazon games"  and Sammy also wants to compete to get back at him.

Lois meets carol and tells him about the film and that his dad is competing for fge voice over. Carol gets scared and walks away. Lois convices carol to do the voice over and carol kisses him runs away.
Its game day and Sammy, Gustav and carol record their version and send it to the jury. Dani and carol get invited to Sammy's life time achievement function where the result of the voice over is announced and carol gets it. Sammy is shocked but while receiving the award he dedicated it to his daughters. After the function carol meets the producer  who tells her that - it was not for the voice she was chosen for a higher purpose. The film  ends with a carol giving voice coaching to a group of women.
Lake portrays her character with ease with the whatever attitude and

Verdict:

This film is not just your feel good romantic comedy which Hollywood gives year after year after year!.Lake bell gives a completely new subject and it's very refreshing to watch.  Though it was all about women empowerment it was never clichéd. Very good debut attempt.
