Short Gist:
A retired cop revisits the case which changes his life completely.
16 Extremes is the name of the films, Its quite an interesting as well as an appropriate name for a whodunit.Right from the trailer, I had a good impression about the film and there are some specific aspects which makes this click. First and foremost is the script, This is a solid story and there is not one loophole of logic, everything fits just perfectly. Its quite difficult to believe that such a young director is capable of such a script. I was expecting some flaws in the story line or something which was left unexplained but every single question was answered in the end.
The second aspect of the film is the way it sticks to the genre, there is no sidetracks there are two narrations which happens in parallel each with a time span of five years almost throughout the film, but that's all. There is no comedy track or songs, no female leads, just the simple narration which breaks our logic every time we try to form an assumption of the plot.
At some point it reminded me of " The Usual Suspects" where there are many interpretations and narrations but the true events is the entire opposite. Finally there is bit of quirkiness to the entire story which makes the characters so lively especially for the lead character's( Rehman) narration at the beginning end and his crazy super mario comparisons. Deepak begins his narration by stating " How unpredictable is life" and he ends it by saying "Now I Can die without guilt" both theses lines seems sensible only if the entire plot is known, which is the last 5 mins of the film. What a way to end the film, Just brilliant.
I am quite sure that Karthick Naren must have done his homework for the film, probably for a year. To make such a complex script and execute it to such an extent is quite a remarkable achievement. Karthik Naren gives his own style to the screenplay by his way of giving captions and the way he narrates the events, especially the way Deepak jumbles between the past and the present and the way they merge at one point. The narration does not end there Karthik keeps the best for the last one hour where he finally unravels the true events, which gives us a completely different perspective to the events and yet makes complete sense.
Finally when i finished watching the film, I got reminded of many short films which have such brilliant scripts but they quite never remain the same when it comes to the mainstream cinema, I feel that the producer of the film needs some credits , to have given good freedom to the director to execute such an offbeat film. D16 gives us the feel of perfect thriller, right to the very end. After such a long time I had a satisfied feeling of watching a good film, so did all the other people who walked out of the theatre with me silently telling how good the movie, was. Hope there are much more good films from the debutant soon.
