Vinnaithandi Varuvaya(2010)

Vinnaithandi Varuvaya(VTV) is a tamil romantic drama film directed by Gautham vasudeva Menon and is considered one of the successful films in his career.

Cast : Silambarasan, Trisha, Ganesh & Samatha etc

Plot and summary:

VTV is the story of Karthik( played by silambarasan) and Jessie( played by Trisha). The entire film is the narration of karthik's life how he met Jessie. How did he fall in love and did it succeed.
The film begins with the marriage scene of Jessie. Karthik is sitting as the marriage among the audience and introspecting what has gone wrong and the flashback begins.

As in all Gautham's film, Karthik is a mechanical engineering pass out who is aspiring to be a filmmaker. His parents are not happy with his decision. Karthik desperately tries to make it big in the cine field.  He makes a friend Ganesh, a film cinematographer (also the cinematographer in the real world) and they become good friends. Ganesh here becomes the mail support for karthik's love to Jessie. As the days pass by Karthik meets Jessie on a sunny evening walking through to him and entering his house. He is struck on the first sight and stares at her surprised. She tells him that she has moved in the upper portion of his house.

Karthik after several attempts to hold his feelings opens up one day to her when she goes to office. She is shocked and Karthik never sees her again for days. He then finds out that she had gone to Kerala . the next day Ganesh and Karthik go to Kerala. After a lots of search Karthik finds Jessie in the church . They become good friends . Jessie's character is part of a mystery in the entire film Very impulsive , changing moods from time to time and some scenes are not quite explainable.

On the way back in the train, Karthik and Jessie share same seats and things get out of hand and Karthik kisses her and she doesn't resist. The next day they meet at a cafe and there is a heated conversation and Jessie walks out. The film then follows several scenes where Karthik persuades Jessie but there is no luck.  Jerry(Jessie's brother) finds out about Karthik and things go wrong between Karthik and jerry.  Jessie invites Karthik to the cafe they once met and tells him about her marriage. Now Karthik is broken and finally goes to her marriage to see her one last time. In an unexpected turn of events she calls of the marriage and sees Karthik.

The following scenes shows Jessie's proposal to Karthik and their times together. Karthik finally joins as an asst.director and leaves Jessie for a 6 months shoot. Jessie is forced at home to get married once again she tries to contact Karthik but is not able to. She finally reaches him and asks if she can run away with him . when Karthik refuses, she ends it abruptly . The true nature of Jessie is portrayed later on( sometimes its quite difficult to understand the way she behaves... May be the director has understood women too well!). She accuses Karthik of some random reasons and ends it( may be it was the only way out of this relationship ).

Karthik then spends a few years in the cine field and decides to make his debut - his life story and titles it- Jessie . He narrates the only way out of this break up is to take this film. During a Shoot in the US Karthik meets Jessie and they catch up. Finally after an intense dialogue Karthik once again proposes and they get married. The scene then transforms into the scene of the actors in karthik's film.

Karthik and Jessie walk out of the theater and Jessie tells him she really liked the film and it reminded of her. They finally bid farewell with tears.( If you could watch the film you will get what i wanted to say in the last few lines)

Verdict:

VTV cannot be called  a commercial film or a film made for cinema fans. Its a true Gautham Menon
film. Its a true romantics film, one inspired from real incidences and characters ( at least that's what I think of it. Or Gautham Menon is really a genius for instilling such real characters)

Simbu has taken a right choice in this film. He underplays and exhibits good control over his acting. A refreshing look and demeanor which will be remembered for times to come. Trisha is the other half who had equal role in the film as compared to Simbu(I might even say a tad bit higher) . she is portrayed in a simple manner with maturity and elegance. It would be very difficult to see any other person don such a role as hers. Finally i can't help to compare the story line to Annie Hall, Though both of them are fairly different, The ending seems to be the same!

A R.Rahman's music is mesmerizing and songs are well woven into the film. Overall a superb movie, and one of the romantic films which will be remembered for a long time.
