Uthama Villian is a Tragic comedy directed by Ramesh Aravind. The story and screenplay is written by Kamal Hassan, He also is the lead actor in the film. The film also starts K.Balachandran, one of the legendary directors in Kollywood who introduced Kamal in the industry.

Plot and Summary:
Uthama Villian is the story of Manorajan (played by Kamal Hassan)- a susperstar in the film industry who has attained fame's peak and the film begins with his film opening, Mano is appreciated by all, but he is not happy about it, he knows that he has gone into the routine of entertainment industry.( The first song on the film is a dance number between Kamal and Pooja ( i don't know if Kamal has done this for the film intentionally or was it done to tell the current situation of tamil film industry)).
The film then follows the life of Mano, a Honest portrayal of a film star's life, may be influenced from his life. On the night of his film's release he learns that his health is deteriorating and he has very little time. He meets Jacob (played by Jayaram) who tells him that he has a daughter. Jacob then narrates the story of Yamini Kamal's long lost love and his daughter.
Mano has very little time in his hands and decides to walk away from his commercial films which are lined up and decides to do one last one with his guru Margadarsi (played by K.Balachandran). The way kamal narrates his predicament makes margadersi to agree for mano's proposal. Then the film in the film- "Uthama Villian" begins
The narration jumps between the film and the actual life of Mano back to back. The film is about Uthaman, a play artist who escapes death many times and finally becomes the king of country by his wits. The story of Uthama Villian and actual life of mano is beautifully connected at the end. Kamal plays a comic role in the the film and a very emotional scenes in his real life which gives us a bit of both to look for. however, the real life of Mano is the essence of the film. There are many emotional scenes in the film , the conversation between Suku ( plated by M.S.Bhaskar) and Mano about the undelivered letters and when Manonmani( played By parvathy nair) and Mano speak for the first time. Kamal brings out his brilliance in all his scenes and even in some makes us cry.
Unlike any other film Kamal has ever done, Uthama villian is quite different. The characters are more real, It was as if Kamal intentionally want to tell the truths of the life of a cine artist. The character of Mano is as such very complex , In the end, Mano makes a Family tree to remember all his relations because the doctors say that he will loose his memory after the operation., a joke of how complicated his life is.
He health becomes worse and worse at the end of the film and some how he completed the film even though he is not quite satisfied with it. he is the admitted in the hospital and goes into the surgery. In the actual film Uthaman is crown in the film and the song "Sagavaram"- Immortal blessing is played and the directors tries to say that Mano will be remembered in the hearts of audience forever.
Verdict:
Its is a very complicated film unlike any other film which Kamal has acted. the strange thing about the film is the connection with Director K.Balachandram. The film got released shortly after the Demise of the great director. It was as if Kamal wanted to do one last film with K.B sir, but actually in the story of the film the opposite happens. In many ways "Uthama Villian' proves to be a dedication to KB sir.
Kamal's films has reputation of getting good realization after some years, There are many films which proves this fact like Dasavatharam, Vishwaroopam and Uthama Villian falls under the same roof. There are intricate things in the film which convey a very deep meaning to the audience, though in all his earlier film it was about abstract things like reality, chaos theory, war etc. Uthama Villian is about Cinema, an artist's life in the cinefield. and its Kamal's final gift to his mentor.
Finally the Name of the film, Uthama' villian - it has good menaing to both Mano's life and the film. In the film Uthaman becomes a villain and murders the king and in real life Mano becomes a do gooder( which literally means a uthaman) when he makes amends for all his mistakes in his real life( i hope i got that meaning right! may still be hidden menaning who knows!)
