(500) Days of Summer (2009)

Plot and Summary:

500 Days of summer is a romantic comedy drama directed by Marc Webb. Its is not a regular feel good romantic comedy like many of those releasing in Hollywood each year but the plot is same, This film is about the 500 days the protagonist - Tom ( Joseph Gordon Levitt) spends with his love- Summer Finn( Zooey Deschanel). Its not a very straight forward narrative where the director shows the beginning of their time together and their time apart back to back.

Tom is a Greeting card writer and a hopeless romantic, we know from his childhood that he did not believe in love and has been alone ever since, the film starts with the break up actually and then pans to 'Day-1" when Tom meets Summer and he decides instantly that he likes her, Summer on the other hand is quite a mystery in the film, like all female leeds in a Romantic film, the protagonist spends the entire film trying to figure out Summer and in the end he does it or it seems so. She is beautiful elegant and when we see her past we can see that she has been attractive her entire life. But because of the seperation of Her mom and Dad at a very young age she also dislikes relationship and wants to be by herself.

The relationship between Tom and Summer is quite complicated though they don't call themselves as Boyfriend-Girlfriend , all through the film,  they do all the stuff that couples do. Though Summer explicitly says that she does not want a serious relationship with Tom, Tom misunderstands Summer's action through out the film( or is it right to say that i do not know) and ends up miserable. He does eventually recover at the end.

Near the end of the film when Summer moves out of the office and he meets her in a weeding and they have a good time together and finally he thinks that he has gotten her back but finally he is disappointed to see her get engaged to someone else. The Climax of the film, ie the last meeting takes place on the 499th day where Tom meets summer in their favorite place in the city and they talk about each other and Tom askes her why did't she tell her about  her wedding and he says that he could never understand her actions. She finally tells him that " she could feel something that she did not feel when she was with him".

The director comes out to say that there may be a few people in one's life which may seem perfect but it is not always attainable, sometimes even quotes chance or coincidence in this case. But the film does end up in a positive note, Tom meets another women- Autumn, and the day count begins once agin in the film). Summer's character continues to be a mystery for Tom , even though he seems to figure it out at the end. i still do not get it.

Verdict:

The film's plot and story line must have very personal connection with the director i think as he says in the starting lines of the film . It is very unique from the way the plot is narrated and the characterisation of Tom and Summer. Though may be a little over exaggerating at times , mainly the talks that Tom and Summer have . Overall a very different romantic film.
