Yutham Sei(2012)

Cast : Cheran, Aadukalam Naren, Y.G Mahendra, Jaya Prakash, Manika Vinayagam, Selvaa

Plot and Storyline:

Yutham Sei is a Tamil Thriller directed by Mysskin starring Director Cheran in the lead role, The film is basically a " Whodunit", one of the genre's which is rare in tamil cinema. The film starts with severed hands packed in carton boxes and kept in public places. The next scene pans to CBI office Chennai, Where JK( Cheran), is called, He looks tired and hands over his resignation to his officer - Naren on account of personal reasons, In later part of the film we learn that JK's sister has been missing for 3 months and he is searching for her ever since. Naren convinces JK that if he takes the current case he would speak to the commissioner about reopening his sister's case. JK agrees reluctantly and the search begins.

Two parallel stories run one involving kidnapping of women by mysteries me, The other one in which random people are kidnapped and tortured, Two strikingly different groups working for their goal. JK & his team try to investigate and he finds out that his sister disappearance has something to do with theses two groups and he gets more eager to solve this case. The rest of the film is if he ever finds out about his sister and who these two gangs really are and what are their motives.

The suspense of the film starts in the first scene itself and we are left speechless halfway through the film when we get to know the identity of the two groups.  typical to all Myskin films, Yutham sei is sets against a tragic backdrop, A brother how is desperate to find out what happens to his sister , a family seeking a revenge for their daughter's death and finally the evils of the society. Cheran plays JK, a mysterious CBI officer,  he is really perceptive and knows exactly what is going to happen next. Cheran shows conviction in his acting when he desperately searches for his sister, even though most of it is futile. The way he reacts when the antagonist calls and tells about his kidnapped sister proves that he is indeed a great actor. He breaks his silence and moderation which he maintains throughout the film right until the very end and even tries to break the law by asking Naren to hand over of the captured to serve as an exchange.

The real deal in the movie is Y.G Mahendra and Lakshmi, It would be a real spoiler if i mention nature of the roles. But it is one of the Boldest character which they have ever done. Although all characterisation in Mysskin's film involves heavy emotion, Laksmi takes the cake in this one for her role as Dr Annapoorani Purushothaman. Jayaprakash as Judas, is one of the important character in the film. His character is one of the peculiar and unique in the film, he plays the role of a doctor in the Mortuary. In the end when explains his real role in the film to JK we can see the depth of his role. I think this must be one for Jayaprakash's best performance as an actor.

Though the film is not a big budget film, there is huge attention given to detail, Right from the way JK examines each clues and arrives at the conclusions and Judas conclusion on the Autopsy this film feels like a Hollywood style crime thriller. And yet it maintains the tone of a Mysskin film with human emotions playing the main role in the film.

Verdict:

Mysskin is considered as one directors in Kollywood for making Hard hitting films, Right from the start of his career as Chithram Pesuthadi to Pisasu (2015) his films are highly unique with a social message or at least social awareness of what is actually going on in the society. Yutham Sei is one of them, I can say more that the actors and the script of the film, the success of the film can be attributed to some of the hard truths about our society which the film exposes.

The Music and Cinemotography are a great help to the mood of the film, Though it follows the unique style which Mysskin always uses it works brilliantly for the film. I personally am a big fan of Mysskin, for his pursuit for talking quality films admist all the commercial films which wee see in Kollywood and Yutham sei is one of best films which he has taken so far. Not only is it really off-beat , but is it really engaging to watch until the very end.
