Plot and Storyline

Naanum Rowdy Thaan  is a tamil Black Comedy directed by Sathosh sivam starring Vijay sethupathi, Nayanthara in lead roles. This is the first attempt for Vijay Sethupathiin a comercial role in a full fledged comedy hero. The film starts with the their childhood both for theHero and the heroin. Pondy pandi (played by Vijay Sethipathi) , son of police inspector Meena Kumari ( played by Raadhika) spends most of his childhood in a police station and he decides to become a big Rowdy following the footsteps of Rajendhiran the local Thug in the place. While the Heroine- Kadambari , daughter of police inspector Ravikumar (Played by Azhagan Perumal) looses her mother in a bomb blast at her home and she takes a vow to take revenge upon the people responsible for their parents deaths.  At some point in the film Pandi and kadambari meet and instantly Pandi is attracted to kadambari. The rest of the film is if Pandi succeeds in his love and does Kadambari get her revenge.

From the introduction song in the film " Naanum Rowdy than" we can assess Vijay Sethupathi's character in the film, he plays the role of a con man trying to trick people in believing that he is local thug.  But he gets quite famous in his place. The real challenge for his is when he meets Kadambari, and when she asks him to kill Killivalavan( played by Parthiban) for her  for her. Nayanthara plays a deaf character and for the first time dubs her own voice in the film. her performance demands much more than Vijay Sethupathi's role, though it is not an extraordinary one it is commendable. The most important performance of all is Parthiban's role as Killivalavan, I could say that this role is similar to the list of the cool villains in the current trend of films. His performance gives the much lacking seriousness in the film and pulls the film through.  True to the name of the film the director brings out all the yesteryear villains in one roof - Ponamballam, Anadraj etc . Anandraj and RJ Balaji's full length comedy is one of the high point in the film.

Verdict:

Naanum Rowdy Than, though can be considered as a commercial success, is not a complete entertainer. It seems to lack in the storyline and becomes too comic at the end. yes, it is light hearted and it is quite refreshing to see Nayathara doing a Deaf person and Vijay sethupathi doing something quite comic for a change but the story does not have any depth anywhere to be found except for few emotional scenes between Vijay Sethupathi and Nayathara, ( May be it is because we are used to watch Vijay Sethupathi as a Method actor in many many films we simply cannot accept it, but it is just my point of view)

Naanum Rowdy Than feels like a B-grade hindi comedy film at some points. It could have been a much classier film if the plot is not too diluted and if the comic portion is a little bit reduced. Overall a good feel good film, Anirudth's background score as well as all the songs  came out really well adding to the success of the film.
