Moondru Mudichu (1976)

Cast: Sridevi, Rajinikanth, Kamal Hassan, N.Vishwanath , Y. Vijaya, Rajamani

Plot and Storyline:

Moondru Mudichu(1976) - [3 Knots] is a tamil drama film directed by K. Balachandar, a remake of telegu hit O Seetha Katha (1974) by K. Vishwanath. The Film is about three people Selvi ( Played by Sridevi), Balaji ( Played by Kamal) & Prasath ( Played by Rajinikanth), you may think that it is a triangualar love story between the three considering the names in the caste and Rajini-Kamal combo should have a good weightage for both characters but think again about the time of the film and the director of the film. This is a completely different tamil- drama film very modern for the time in got released and yet a very typical KB sir's film, very intense ,out of the ordinary at the same time it has all the elements required for a drama.

Balaji and Selvi Love each other and on seeing this his friend Prasath becomes jealous on Selvi and wants to marry her. What happens to the three at the end is the basic plot of the film.

The film begins with Selvi and her sister coming out of a film and at the same time Balaji and Prasath come out of the same film. Thus begins the complex story in their lives which ends in a way we would never imagine, such is the brilliance of  Balachandar sir. Sridevi as Selvi, is the backbone of the entire film. Talk about tamil heroins not given important roles, In this flick Sridevi can be considered as the Protagonist, her transformation from a innocent person in the initial scenes to the Bold woman at the end is very convincing and Kudos to Balachandar for introducing such an important role to her.

Rajinikanth, the antagonist of the film is the second main character in the film. One other attribute of the film which makes it really unique and on par with the Hollywood films released at that time is the Character portrayed by Rajamani. Rajamani plays the Alterego of Rajinikanth, He appears whenever he commits a sin and takes a count of it. It is quite interesting to see Rajini to portray such a role in tamil cinema. He battles his Alterego and in many times looses to the dark side inside of him. Really one of the unique charecters in tamil cinema altogether. In many ways Prasath's character is emotionally unstable, though it is not told directly in the film, the way Rajini portrays Prasath at the point when Balaji dies and he steers the boat with an agressive look in his eyes and the point near the end when he imagines being chased by his Alterego proves this. One of the most intriguing characters in the film. Moodru Mudichi is and will always be the career opening for Rajini as an antagonist, a negative role which makes him world famous in his later films.

Moodru Mudichi is a true Musical, I am not trying to say that there are so many songs in the film, actually there are only three, but its the place that they come and the time of their placement which makes all the difference, Actually thinking about it now it is not that unique considering K Balachandar is the director of the film. All the songs makes complete sense to their placement especially the song on the Boat - Vasantha Kala which begins as a romantic songs ends up tragically.

It will be very rare to see such a cast and such a story line any time soon in tamil cinema, All because of on name - K Balachandar. It is the respect he commands for the story which makes kamal to sign up for a role which ends for him at the second half of the film and It is K Balachandar who is able to make Sridevi as the protagonist of the film having Two guns of tamil cinema Kamal and Rajini in the film. There are very few directors in the industry who make films for just sheer joy of making it and KB sir comes near at the top of that list. Though it was a very early film both for the leeds and the directors we can see that this is going to be a really unique film right from the way he rolls up the credidts of the film in the beginning.
