Courtroom Drama and much more..... Manithan(2016) Review

After the point I watched the trailer for I.Ahmed's third venture Manithan, I was surprised by  the intensity of the film and the dialogues, I was expecting the film to fail (most good trailers lead to bad films, thats my logic :P). But Manithan proves my judgement wrong completely.

So where to start about this film, First the genre itself is quite unheard of in the recent times, Udaynithi plays Sakthi, a Lawyer who is starting is career and his character is as such quite different he from all the roles he has done in the past. For instance, he is not a regular masala film hero in this film, He is made fun off in his work, He makes fun of his own jokes, he does not make punch dialogues, and finally  there are no fight scenes in the film actually he gets beaten up rather. Its in overall a very offbeat character for Uday. I think it is all Ahmed's choice to give a proper remake of the Hindi movie Jolly LLB 2013 and off course the effort of the Manithan Team which has come out very well.

The film gets to you in very few moments after it begins, don't get me wrong there is no suspense or thrill in the film which keeps you in your seats, Its something different. Its the sheer difference in all aspects of the film - Uday's character, the female lead- Priya ( Played by Hanshika Motiwani), the music, the narration. Even Hansika , who is known for the bubbly female lead keeps a low profile and does a mature role, its pretty good actually. However the two other important characters in the film are  Advocate Adishehsan ( played by Prakash Raj) and the Judge( Played by Radha Ravi), Most of the film revolves between the courtroom drama between the three. The story is quite predictable but thats what makes the film work, its the way Sakthi becomes from an innocent man who just wants fame from the business to a better man at the end (the change in his character which we see in the trailer is beautifully shown in the entire film) and the director shows this in a very subtle manner. Its a fresh start for Uday and I hope he continues doing such films. Santhosh Narayanan's music is another aspect which makes the film work, Although all the songs are just part of the story and there are no separate ones in a foreign locations,it works very well. Although the placement it works very well.

I cannot say that this is one of the greatest courtroom drama in tamil cinema, that would be a overstatement, But it is a very good try by Udaynithi and it is a successful attempt i would say, After the train of romantic comedies with director Rajasekar, It is quite refreshing to see Uday don a serious role and i must say, He has improved greatly from when he has started.
