Kuttrame Thandanai - A true drama admist stereotypes

When Kirumi released in 2015, I was really surprised at the script and how the film ended, a  non conventional film even for an offbeat one. The story as such was very different, the protagonist was not a usual character, he is greedy man who wishes for more than what he deserves and the film draws to a point where you would think that the protagonist will go after the bad guys but that doen't happen,Though it was quite abrupt it was really a unique film with a message conveyed in a subtle way. This time with Kutrame thandanai it is the same but in a different subject.

Short Gist(Spoilers Ahead): A man with a peculiar eye disorder try to salvage money from a wealthy man for a crime he is suspected for.  Does his plan works or not is the remainder of the film

The narration of the film is like a book( this is completely my view!) the narration begins somewhere in the middle of the story line leaving out the Epilogue to the end. Even the characters in the film have specific details which you see in a novel, Take the lead ,Ravi, he has a peculiar eye defect which makes his eyesight like seeing through a pinhole and this makes the film quite interesting, just describing the detailing of his character is quite refreshing to see. Then there is the female lead - Pooja Devariya t, a typical timid person who is afraid even to look up to men when she speaks and then there is the character of Aishwarya which we see only in flashback and narratives of different characters in the film but forms an important part in the film.

I think this film would be one of the important films in Vidarth's career. After Prabhu Soloman's Mynaa Vidarth's performance is brilliant in Kuttrame Thandanai, More than the way he has portrayed the character of Ravi, its the level of detail which is put in the character. Vidarth proves to be a method actor time and again after Mynaa and it is really worth the wait for him in Kuttrame thandanai. Rahman's short but pivol role in the film also needs a special mention. After Aravind Swamy's Thani oruvan, Rahman's character in the film stands out as a suave antagonist in the film. Actually this is not a film with a protagonist/antagonist , the way the character of Ravi is slowly unravelled tells us how good the director really is. The background score by Isaignani Ilayaraja is very apt and the mastero proves again and again that he is still in the game. The BGM helps the screenplay in a big way in conveying what needs to be said.

Both the female leads Aiswarya rajesh and Pooja Devariya have done justice to their roles. Pooja playing a timid middle class working women, quite different from her previous roles and Aishwarya whose character is revealed only by the narration of the other characters in the film makes a lasting impact even though she is there for a very short time in the film. Finally about the director manikandan. As soon as the film begins I could sense that Kuttrame Thandanai could not be his second script. Though Kakka Muttai won a national award, it is not that artistic, it quite a simple story truthfully told but thats not the case with Kuttrame Thandanai.  Its a unique film in so many ways - the story, the characters, the narration and so on. I hope he doesn't stop here and makes many more meaningful ones.
