After the two teasers of Gautham Menon's Aacham yenbathu Madamayada(AYM) and listening to all the songs, one can get to a basic idea about the film. I for one was expecting something close to VTV even though there was some amount of action sequences in both the teasers, But after watching the film I can say that it was complete deception. The film is in a complete genre and when we say AYM as an action romance film(as quoted by Wikipedia) it is an understatement, a thriller would be a better genre to describe this one.
Short Gist:
Muralidharan(Played by Simbu) and Leela(played by Majima Mohan) plan to take a road trip which ends up messy and what happens to both of them at the end is the remainder of the film
Director Gautham Menon is known for his characters in his films, When i think of him i remember Anbuchelvan IPS, Gautham, Ragavan, Sathyadev IPS and Karthik. They all have something unique, may be the dialogue or the way they are shown. In AYM the way the character of Murali is quite similar Karthik in VTV, The way the two leads meet and they the way the films runs till the first half is comparable to what happens in VTV but this is till the title song of the film starts and that is the defining moment of the film where I feel that "Muralidharan" is born and everything comes into perspective.
Becoming a "Man"
In the second teaser of the film which was released like a week before there is a dialogue by the protagonist and this is repeated in an almost confusing beginning of the film where an unrelated chain of events and the dialogue of becoming a man is played in the narrative. I think this defines the core of the film, being an adult and doing what is necessary at the right time. This film though the story line is quite overwhelming shows Simbu in a completely different perspective. Muralidharan is not a calm, cool or stylish character which we see in most of Gautham menon's film, He is angry, emotional, and a bit like the silambarasan who we see in the talk shows or interviews (Its just a thought, don't judge me now as his follower :P). What this does to the film is that, it makes the it quite real and helps the narrative in a way. I feel that this film will prove to be one of the films in his acting career for his performance.
Though all the songs are played along with the movie, there is no separate timeline for the tracks except for thalli pogathe which is directed quite well and the background score is great and somewhat similar to Yennai Arinthaal. Most of the film's second half happens in Maharashtra and Baba Sehgal plays the antagonist and he speaks only a little bit of tamil which really helps the film making it a true GVM film, or else it will be any other tamil film where the bombay villian speaks as good tamil as the hero. Majima Mohan shares equal time line in the film as that of Simbu in the film and does what is needed in the film to perfection.
After watching the film AYM reminded me of Kaaka Kaaka, GVM's first hit in Kollywood. His unusual way of story telling, giving importance to violence in the movie, making the character as real as possible and giving as much importance to the Antagonist as that of the Hero were some of the main elements which one can see in most of his films, mostly pertaining to action films. Most important of all is how close are the character to reality which makes his character more relatable. I felt that his recent movies like Yennai Arinthal where there is something lost in his oldways but AYM puts him back to his old self(just in some aspects)
However for AYM I think Gautham has bent his rules, as he did for Yennai Arinthal. I can also say that this is more comparable to Yennai Arinthal in a way, Giving more importance to the "Self", referring to protagonist and keeping the film as a narrative from his angle till the end. Though the story(mainly in the last twenty minutes) takes quite a big turn and in a very teeny tiny way the film becomes like a typical simbu-commercial film. The film works! and I felt quite satisfied like the way i feel when i have watched a good film at the end.
