On Target! - 8 Thottakal 2017

In most crime novels I have read , There is this preface which is about the protagonist or the antagonist's life which is there just to give some context about the main character of the film, In case of 8 thotakkal, It is about Sathya(Played by Vetri). He goes to prison at the age of 10 for a murder he never commits At that time when someone suggests him to become a police officer, he shrieks of very thought. The film then pans to current time where Sathya is a police officer and he seems almost emotionless. An unorthodox protagonist for an unique crime thriller

Its quite difficult to write a short gist for this film as the script is quite complex with many parallel narrations and backstories. As the film progresses it is very clear that this a work of a debutant, The story line and the portrayal of the protagonist and the antagonist is in such way that this movie is an out and out off-beat film, made just for the storyline and not for any commercial intent. Actually it would be wrong to call this a protagonist- Antagonist film after the introduction of Murthy( Brilliant performance by M.S. Bhaskar), the film transforms into something different completely.

Vetri's debut film as a calm, shy and almost a cowardly police officer is quite difficult opportunity for anyone to have. I think Vetri has justified to the need of the character. But the character of the antagonist - Murthy completly overshadows him and it seems to be the intention of the director too. Though the main act of the film is over near the middle of the film, the robbery of the bank. Its the backstory of the three robbers that keeps the momentum of the film. Like all robbery films they fight among themselves and finally the strongest of them prevails, Kudos to the director once again for having such a good script to connect all three characters to the story line of the story. The main backstory is undoubtedly of Murthy, which is hyped throughout the film, His motive behind the crime drives the entire movie till the end.

I expected that the M.S.Bhaskar's character will break in between, Either Police officer Pandiyan(Played by Nasser) or even Sathya might take him down, Even if it might appear to be broken at the end when Sathya gives an account of what had happened during the last few minutes,
At one point I think Sathya sees himself in Murthy as both were victims of crimes they did not commit and have suffered through their lives. I can clearly see how Sathya would allow Murthy to murder himself with his gun, A satisfied death, thats what Murthy tells before he pulls the trigger in the hands of Sathya.
At the end the Police officers accounts for bullets fired from the missing gun and they account for 8 bullets out of which one for the life of Murthy. Almost all on target!
What an apt name for the film and what a perfect end to it.

Director SriKrishna is definitly in the line of budding directors like Karthik Naren, Manikandan,  Lokesh Kanagaraj and I hope he repeats his success.
