Piku(2015)

Cast:Amitabh Batchan, Deepika Padukone & Irrfan.

Plot & Summary:

Piku is a comedy drama film about the relationship between a father and his daughter. The film begins with a typical day, Deepika plays a middle aged single daughter who lives with her dad( played by Amitabh) and is basically the " man of the house", Amitabh  - Bhaskor Banerjii  is a old man in his seventies. He has very notcible look in the film with a round belly , always in his pajamas and sweaters and  big bulky glasses.  He is very critical and afraid of diseases  and is afraid of dying hospitalized. The Bengali slang of entire film gives a nice touch ( a guessed it because they us ki ki all the time). Deepika is 30 years old in the film  and unmarried and blames it on her dads condition and Amitabh wants deepika to be unmarried and to take of care of him. The relationship between the father and the daughter is beautifully portrayed. Its not very explicit but in a subtle manner... The scene where deepika scolds him after he ride a cycle for 25 kms is one of them. This is not a very emotional movie to say... The most important discussion in the entire film is about constipation.

Irffan plays the owner of a cab company in Delhi. Deepika regularly uses Irfan's cab but all the drivers end up despising her cause of her arrogant behavior. One day Deepika books a cab to kolkata and no one turns up . With no other choice Irfan plans to drive them by himself. This is where the film actually begins. Irffan plays this with ease with his calm and controlled acting and his sarcasm offcourse! He nails it. I think this is one of the mature films of our age.... Irfan is about 40 in the film and I cannot say it's romantic, but when he tries to flirt with Deepika and when they talk about life its really better than any other romantic film and the scenes where Irfan tries to impress Deepika and Amitab by talking of constipation is fun filled and pure unadulterated laughter.

The background and the cinematography really need a mention. The sitar background at the end of the film where its set in kolkata is superb. The scenes on the Hubli river, the Howrah bridge, the tram and old scenes from the old part of the city makes you wanna go there and see it for yourself. Finally about Amitabh's acting,  he plays the role of a critical old man always criticizing everyone around him.  he makes it look so easy but it is the most difficult role in the film and he is on the mark.

Verdict:

Its one of the feel good film with no artificial treatment just pure natural laughter.Even though it is a comedy and I couldn't get half of the film (sorry I don’t get Hindi very well and this is with a Bengali slang!!) it was very real to me. I could identify some of the characters in real life.
