Ex Machina(2015) is a Sci-Fi thriller written and directed by debutante Alex Garland. The title of the film is derived from Deux Ex machina - god from the machines (there is no reference for this in the film, purely guessing), meaning a machine for bringing the Gods into the play.
Cast: Domhnall gleeson, Alicia Vikander & Oscar Issac
Plot and Summary:
Caleb(Played by Domhnall Gleeson) is a programmer working for "Bluebox"( its like google - world's largest search engine). he wins a contest where he gets to spend a week with the company's owner- Nathan ( played by Oscar Issac) in an remote estate( this is really remote complete with a snowcapped mountain, river and a forest). Only after arrival Caleb finds that he is going to be part of an experiment to study an Artificial intelligence which Nathan has made. The Experiment and its outcome is the basic plot of the film.
Nathan is what you call an eccentric creator, he is a billionaire who lives alone on an deserted, remote house all by himself with his AIs. his place is what you call a bachelor's dream, with secret locations which can be accessed by entry cards, He is very casual, mostly in his tracks or shorts. always drinking or training. Caleb though reserved at first starts to speak with him freely in the latter part of -the film. Nathan introduces the concept of the Touring test to Caleb which basically is to find out if the Artificial intelligence can be sensed by the human or not (i,e) Nathan wants Caleb to check if he has really created a conscious being. Caleb after initially hearing about Nathan's invention calls him " You cannot mean that this is the invention of the decade but the you have become God by creating a conscious". This quote by Caleb has significant meaning throughout the film and at the end.
The film follows the various sessions of Caleb and Ava (Played by Alicia Vikander). Nathan studies these sessions and checks the progress of Ava's responses. There are power blackouts which happen in the film when Ava speaks to Caleb in a different tone and tells Caleb that Nathan cannot be trusted. Caleb suspicion grows stronger and stronger throughout the film about Ava's behavior during the blackout but he doesn't reveal that to Nathan. Through the many session he develops an attraction towards Ava and she also seems to like him. many conversation occur between Nathan and oscar about the gender of Ava and the necessity of a heterosexual AI and whether Nathan has done the right thing about creating an AI in the first place. Nathan explains to Caleb about - the automatic painting by John Pollock and how is that related to the creation of Ava's conscious. In many occasions throughout the film Nathan thinks as the AI as not an ultimate creation of mankind but as an evolution which is inevitable. He also tells him his future generations after AVA.
One night after a couple of drinks Nathan is out and Caleb takes his key and goes to his private room He finds out about the previous generation of Ava and the tests performed on thim. he also finds that kyoko( Nathan's maid ) is also an AI. After seeing all his experiments leads to question the reality where Caleb is in. If any one is in human at all. During his session with Ava he makes a plan for their escape and the next day. On the final day of his visit Nathan tells him about the experiment and that it was a real success and Caleb's actual purpose,
Caleb explains to Nathan about his break-in to his lab and what he finds there we now see the different experiments which Nathan has done on Ava. Nathan then tells him the the real experiment on AVA was that how she found a way to be free from Nathan's place, Caleb was only her way out. Caleb now feels cheated and has blank look on his face, like there is no going back from this now. On the specified time the power shuts down all things go wrong.
It is the conviction that Alicia gives in the film which makes us believe her deceit and finally end up dumbstruck at the end. The film leaves many unanswered questions at the end. If Ava's feeelings towards Caleb are a lie or she was left with no other choice? Does she sustain in the real world? Does Caleb come out?
Verdict:
Though the film's story line is similar to any other AI Film ( I-Robot), It is the way the director presents that pulls the film through, Nathan's over confident and self assuming character proves him wrong at the end. At the end, Nathan and Caleb discuss about the Openheimar's words - "I am death, the destroyer of the world". As in all AI films AVA betrays her creator and walks out into the world.
The soundtrack is gives a techno horror touch to the film and the location in which the film was made proves very apt to the film.It was similar to the creation of Frankenstein. The author thourghout the film gives a biblical reference to the film- the betrayal of the creator at the end.
