Plot and summary:
The film follows the events in the life of Simon foster(played by tom Hollander) the secretary of state for international development and how he becomes part of the Anglo- American invasion into Iraq. The film begins with an interview which Simon gives the previous night where he mentions" war is unforeseeable ". This triggers a series of events which Leeds to a situation where he ends up being the reason for the reason for one.
Karen Clark (played by Mimi Kennedy) is the US secretary of the state for policy. She uses Simons's words in her support for anti war policy. Liza weld(played by Anna Chlumsky) is her aid, who publishes a paper on the negative implications of war. This document turns into a British intelligence file to support war at the end. Toby ( played by Chris Addison ) joins Simons's team the day of his interview, he is ambitious at the same time very stupid , he becomes somewhat the reason for Simon's war speech.
Malcomn Tucker( played by Paul Capaldi) is one of the important characters in the film, he is the director for communications to the prime minister . but he main role in the film is revealed at the end. He is constant watch over Simon and his team trying to control his doings. The film gains pace at United Nations headquarters in U.S. where a vote is held to decide upon the war. Toby tries secrely to avoid the war by leaking the PWIPPIP(paper published by Liza Weld) to the BBC. This creates a chaos in UK and at the end if war is declared or not is the big question.
The director clearly conveys message which relates to any political or corporate situation. Some decisions are pre-decided and what that happens in between are just a hoax. Linton Barwick, US secretary of state for future policy has made all decisions for war and Malcolm comes to the UN just to give a intelligence report to support it. The film is very relatable to any corporate situations where what ever we do the outcome cannot be changed.
The film is very unusual than the others. Its more of a documentary. It was shot intentionally that way with sudden zoom in scenes and armature handling of the viewpoint to make to seem like it was a paparazzi shooting it.
Steve Coogan gives a cameo in the film as a affected citizen. he becomes a primary reason for Simon loosing his job.
