Plot and Storyline:

Kuttram Kadithal is a Tamil drama film written and directed by Debutant Bramha . G. It is a film about corporal punishment in school, How an action of a teacher changes her whole life in a single night. the film starts with a couple travelling in a truck to chennai, When the driver asks about what has happened , the flashback begins and the story unravels itself.

Its starts with Merlin( Radika Prasidhha) and manikandan( Sai Rajkumar) , newly wed couples getting ready for day ahead, Merlin works as a school teacher and Manikandan an engineer in private company. There is a paralllel track for Chezhiyan (Master Ajay), a mischievous kid who zooms his mother's auto early in the day. On the day When merlin is in the Classroom watching over some one else's class she accidentally beats Chezhiyan , he faints never to wake up again. there is a big fuss in school soon the prinicipal Thanikachalam asks Merlin to leave school and not to comeback. The rest of the film is a realistic portrayal of how this issue erupts in the media and what happens to Chezhiyan at the end.

Corporal punishment is a very common in indian schools, there has been lots of news in the papers which we see that are similar to the storyline of the film. Though it is a very straightforward storyline what makes "Kuttram Kadithal" so gripping to watch is the Characterisation and the screenplay in the film. i think Merlin can be considered as the Protagonist in the film,From the beginning of the film  we can see that she is a lot of stress as she has gotten married without the consent of her parents as he was a hindu and she was a christian what happens on that day brings about a lot of stuff to her from which we question if even she is mentally stable, she is constantly haunted by the action she did towards the child. What is even more interesting to watch is the journey which the couple take in the middle of the night which is filled with gripping scenes and sometimes really scary.

Most of the scenes in Kuttram Kadithal happens in a school, i could not more agree to the scenes which the director depicts , right from the point where the teachers shun away from the topic of Sex education  to the way the teachers handle children in india, There are very few films whaich depict the actual school situation like Taare Zameen Par, Kuttram Kadithal is one of the very few of them. The film ends with a very good social message about teachers and how they should take care of their children, a very positive ending to a melodramatic thriller.

Verdict:

Though the plot does not have any twists or turns the screenplay and the performances of the actors pulls the film through. I really did not expect such a performance from a complete debutante crew. Especially Merlin and Cheziyan's mom outplay their roles, I don't know how the director found them but i am sure they have a bright future in the industry.

It is very surprising that its Bramha's first film, his treatment of character, cinematography is like a skilled expert. i could see shades of Myskkin in his film making. I hope he makes many more such films in the future. The film has won national Award for the best tamil feature film, it is worth the prize and this film will remembered for a long time in tamil cinema. In my opinion it is a classic!
