Plot and Storyline:
The Stanford Prison Experiment is an american Thriller film based on a real incidents about an psychological experiment conducted by Dr Philip Zimbardo during August 16-21 1971. It is about how violence develops in a prison cells between prisoners and guards, The film is also based on the book " The Lucifer Efffect : How good men turn evil" by the doctor himself.
The film starts with an interview of the candidates of the experiment and they are separated into guards and Prisoners and the experiment begins and how does it end is the remainder of the film. The film is more of a documentary , as most of it was based on real life incidents. Though the film is based on a simple storyline the way the characters evolve makes it engaging. The Film focuses largely on the psychological effects the prison environments has on the guards and the prisoners. the director of the Study Dr Zimbardo himself acts as superintendent of Police to emulate an actual prison environment.
What is something which is very unique in the film , which is even spoken of in great detail in the end of the film is the Human Psyche. How do the prisoners act to guards when they are imposed of certain rules and how they are pushed to their limits and finally how they break is summary of the film. As the film progresses, Dr Zimbardo makes the experiment more and more real by making the prison more and more real which means more torture and abuse and there comes a point in the film when some of the prisoners try to escape out of the prison. Dr Zimbardo himself gets involved in the experiment when he tries to convince one of the prisoners to stay and then begins to harass him further unknowingly.
Its the end of the film which makes it quite abrupt, but it is quite convincing. [Spoliers Ahead] The situation becomes quite unbearable in the experiment and Dr Zimbardo intervenes and stops the experiment in the middle and there is a blank faces on the prisoners which tells us to what extent everyone where involved in it. It is as though they believed that it was an actual prison and they were punished for their misdeeds. The film in many ways raises many questions on how we just get accustomed to the things which surround us and how we are unaware of what we are capable of unless the situation presents itself. Finally there is nothing much to review in the film, it is a very good portrayal of actual events. very Subtle and very convincing.
