Return of the Gangster - Kabali 2016

I always wanted to write about Kabalai. Even before the film got released last week, the sheer difference of this film to the film  super star has done in the past decade is too high, The list is too long to mention. It is quite shocking if you see the cast and crew and Rajinikanth  and the equation doesn't add up. From many interviews by John Vijay and also by the director ranjith, we can conclude is that Rajinikanth really wanted to do a different film. One that would stand out in the past decade and I believe that we must be really in a different mindset to watch Kabali.

Short Gist (Spoilers Ahead):

An aging mob boss Kabaleswaran( Played by Rajinikanth) comes back from prison to take his rightful place in Malaysia.

Having watched the film finally, i think that the choice taken by Rajinikanth is quite commendable and the film will be one of unique films in his career. Looking at the director's past experiences in the industry, i cannot say that Ranjith is the best director for Rajinikanth and i can't even say that he is not a very good commercial director. Madras and Attakathi were very good Tamil Drama films with good performance  oriented roles for Karthi and Dinesh respectively. Thats whats really excites me, watching Rajinikanth after a long time as a performer. From the very first scene through out the film, His puffed eyes and grey hair very different to see Rajini dawn this look in the entire film. His scenes with Aamir( Played by Jon Vijay) where he speaks of his delirious thoughts about his wife and when he tells to him " I don't know how many sins i have to commit in this wretched life" is very interesting to see, After watching him say only punch dialogues and comedy dialogues throughout in his earlier films

But I have to say that Ranjith has tried his level best to make it a Thalaivar film, the "Nerupu da" BGM which comes often in the film and his dialogues gives us the vibes. The highlight of the film is the flashback narrative which comes bit by bit in the film throughout and the beginning of the gangster is quite interesting to see. Again to point out the difference on how Kabali is different from Rajinikanth's earlier film, the protagonist is not a righteous man, He is not anywhere similar to Basha. he is a Hardcore bad guy who kills and whats to be a Don at the end. I don't know how Rajini accepted to do this role but it was very refreshing to see him perform. The other casts of the film, mainly the female leed - Kumuthavalli( played by Radhika Apte), Who has an equal performance as that of Kabali  has done a perfect job for the role, with her simple looks, she looks very convincing and quite a good casting choice by Ranjith.  The music is just great, both the slow bit and fast ones, Santhosh Narayanan has saved his best for thalaivar

Kabali has to be watched twice, For an ardent Thalaivar fan it takes quite a while to sink in and accept the fact that Rajini has done a character film. It was like watching Mullum Malarum or Aarilirunthu Arubathu varai to see Rajinikanth in the hardcore performing scenes. The only thing what i felt was the way the film was changed to suit rajinikanth( I am guessing it completely), I felt that it could have been more offbeat like Madras or Attakathi, Kabalai is a film by director Ranjith that is certain from the cast of the film and all the elements of the film, I feel that the script was made keeping in mind the "Rajini" factor which makes the film a bit of this and that. But you cannot blame Rajith or Rajini for both of them have done the best. Just a thought from an ardent fan!!
