Uriyadi 2016 - Expect the Unexpected !!!

I really did not think that "uriyadi" would be this good. It was with much speculations that I watched this film, Even within the first 30 mins the film was not really engaging, But somewhere in my mind I really thought it would be a different film.

Short Gist (Spoilers Ahead!)

It had too much mundane stuff going on, the film was set in 1990s and the  the story is about four engineering college students and that too in a college out of no-where, and the film is like an incident in their day to day life. The Protangonist, the director, producer and he has many more credits for the film is  Lenin Vijay (played by Vijay Kumar), It is correct to say that "Uriyadi" is his dream come true. How the protagonist and his friends get dragged into the political drama is the short gist of the entire film.

The film starts quite slow, and since the cast and crew are completely new except for Mime Gopi all the other actors/actresses are quite new. The film starts like a political drama and the life of these four students goes parallel. There is a point in the film where the students gets attacked by gangsters and at the point the genre of the film changes completely to an out and out thriller. the screenplay is just so good and the level of detail given to explain each incident leading to the fight is quite good. Its quite surprising to see a completely debutant crew executing such an action sequence. What is even more surprising to me is how the move transforms in the later part of the film.

Although reviewers in the internet and media appreciate "Uriyadi" for the social message it conveys, I feel quite different after watching the film. What I could think of, after watching "Uriyadi" was  a connection to" No Country for Old men", It was a thriller in Hollywood which came 9 years back. The story line or the concept is completely different, but there are some similarities between these two films. In No country for old men, the whole movie is focused on Killing, How does the killer escapes the serial killings, what are all ways in which Killing scene be shown to the camera, No Country of old men worked mainly due to the fact that the director was able to bring out many nuances of action scenes which the industry was not aware of at that time.

I think after some point in the second half, Uriyadi also becomes such kind of a film, especially the scenes involving the Mad man and also in the end where the director kills the political party leaders and the film ends. I don't think the film works because of the social message or the acting of the crew, it mainly works because such a genre of pure action is not known to kollywood, not yet at least. I am not saying that "Uriyadi" is a completely experimental, it has a female lead also and also some comedy track along the story line, Actually the film ends quite well with a message conveyed to the public.

The film released with quite less promotion and it was released with the help of the fellow director Nalan Kumaraswamy near the time of the release. But the man who needs to be mentioned here is Vijay Kumar, he person who has been mentioned the most number of times in the credits section of the film and the person who we see lasty in the film with a blade at his hand in the Climax. There has been several videos of him talking about the film making and asking for support. I could really see the effort which he might have put in to make this film from his words. The result is a one of a kind film and one of the bests of 2016. I sincerely wish that he makes many more films like this one in the future
