I have always liked Suseenthran's movies, except when he goes big with a star studded cast. When he mellows down and tries to do something simple it works really well. Especially his innings with Vishnu Vishal has always been successful. This time with a period drama - Maveeran Kittu, Suseethran hopes to make one of the very old formulas of kollywood- A film about the caste system and a story of few affected by it
Short Gist:
In a village where the caste system is still predominant, The protagonist and his friends try to bring about a change. Whether they succeed or not is the remainder of the film
Both the storyline and the narration is pretty straightforward, there are no Twists or an unexpected scenes which happens throughout the film. The timeline of the film and the stage as such is quite new and not often shown in kollywood which makes it quite interesting to watch. Although the genre is not new in Kollywood, there has been some successful films like Subramaniapuram, Vaagai Sooda Va and by the same lead hero Mundasupatti. But what makes this more special and quite a necessary film is the main theme of the film, the caste system. It is very well known theme actually, of you look at kollywood 10 years back almost 50% of the films will have this theme but this was used just as an element blended in the commercial element of the film. But in " Maveeran Kittu ", the entire film almost every scene is based upon this theme almost to an extent that it overcomes the romance, comedy elements on the film
Vishnu Vishal has become a seasoned method actor and although pulling of an 80s look might seen to be different for other leeds but for him it is just like a usual role, This is his second move as a period actor and he does what is needed. SriVidya as the female leed is very apt for the role and though there is not much acting scope, It is a pretty decent job done. Parthipan plays a major role in the film, I can say that he is almost the Protagonist of the film, As a leader of the social group of the village, he takes most of the screen space, more than Vishnu Vishal himself, atleast his impression is lasting throughout.
Suseenthran's genre of films is pretty interesting, There are films like Venilla Kabbadi Kuzhu, Athalal Kathal Seiveer, Jeeva which are comletly offbeat with a little or no comeercial motive and some with very hard hitting social messages. On the other hand there are films like Rajapattai, Payum Pulli which makes me wonder why did he did all those films. Maveeran Kittu falls in the first category, there is strong importance given to the script which makes for an unusual story line and an unconventional ending.
For instance just to give a bit of spoiler! - At the end Parthiban and his fellow men walk in the forbidden streets of their village carrying the corpse of their friends en route to the grave yard, and the Protagonist lies dead in a far of forest and they have achieved the goal for which they stood for.
Star Cast:
Vishnu Vishal, Srividya, Parthiben, Soori
