Its quite difficult for a story line like Manchester by sea to be nominated for Oscars if it has been not narrated the way it has been, After watching the film it just occured to me that this is one of the most subtly made tragedies I had ever seen. Casey Affleck wins the oscars for the best actor category for this film, and its a worthy performance for an oscar.
Short Gist:
Lee( Played by Casey Affleck) revisits his home for his brothers family and relives one of his lifes worst memories.
The most significant aspect of the movie is how it has been narrated, I cannot say that it is one of a kind or it has never been done before, but there is something in the screenplay, the narration that draws you into plot of the film and into Lee's character. The narration is parallel , the past and the present of Lee's life until the tragic incident which is showed somewhere in the middle in a very simple way without dragging it to the end like all the other melodramatic films do.
Lee's character and how Ben Affleck portrays it forms the backbone of the film and his intriguing actions makes us wonder what might have happened to him or what he might be thinking throughout the film, Just to give a perspective, The film begins with the death of Lee's brother and film follows how Lee arranges for the his brother's funeral, he confronts his past relations, his nephews, his wife and through all these times he maintains this frigid character throughout the film. It seems he is almost emotionless in the present narrative and this forms the major portion of the film. There are these scenes between less and his Ex-wife which forms one of the pivotal portions of the film which could explain his character and the scene where Less confesses his actions, These few scenes proves how good the writer is and How a scene can be so much powerful with just a conversation between two people nothing else.
Ben Afflect's acting in the film is nothing unique, I think this makes the film all the more natural, the simplicity of his acting and how he exhibits very subtle expressions when he is reminded of his past is just perfect for the narration. The sadness in his eyes and how he is hauted by his past from time to time which is reminded by the narration of his past just adds to the depth of the film
The background score of the film which is almost non existent. There is only very specific points in the film where there is specific background score for the film, the rest of the film is just mere dialogues and silence just like a true drama. The film ends in a somewhat a positive note where Lee and his nephew walk together and there is nothing life changing happening at the end just their two lives just moving on.
